Why Ellis Ericson chose EPS/Epoxy - Technology for the living shape

Ellis doesn't choose his materials by chance. The EPS (expanded polystyrene) + epoxy resin duo is at the heart of its approach, because it offers the only platform capable of unleashing the full potential radical shapes, in particular the Edgeboards and Lite Kite.
Two surfboards with white finishes and black logos are shown from side and top, highlighting different sections labeled to indicate areas reinforced with layers of 6oz and 4oz fiberglass.

EPS: living, hand-cut foam

Unlike conventional PU breads, EPS arrives in raw block form, with no pre-rocker or imposed contours.
Ellis cuts them himself hot-wireto sculpt its rockers and volumes like a craftsman cuts stone. The result:

  • Absolute freedom of shapeno industrial constraints
  • Enhanced buoyancy easier rowing, earlier take-off
  • Weight reduction for more manageable boards

Epoxy: more than a resin, an intelligent reinforcement

Epoxy has a superior mechanical strength 30 to 40% than polyester. It hugs the EPS better, forming a coherent, long-lasting laminate.
Tangible benefits :

  • Fewer dings
  • Better resistance over timeeven with cracks
  • Controlled flex the board bends without breaking, then returns to its original shape - a lively feeling underfoot
  • Enhanced shape memoryideal for boards with complex contours

A material/process pairing that redefines the standard

The EPS/Epoxy combination allows Ellis to push back the boundaries of design: concave rails, radical transitions, domed boards or sculpted center channels - all of which remain stable, lightweight and high-performing over time. It's a technology that doesn't cheatBut it's also one that accompanies each idea with coherence.

Bonus: an ethical choice

  • Fewer toxic substances in the process
  • EPS 100% recyclable in the Ellis workshop
  • Boards more sustainablefewer replacements

Ellis Ericson technology - An alchemy of science, heritage and sensations

EPS/Epoxy + Hydrodynamic design: a no-compromise formula

At Ellis Ericson, each board is the fruit of a radically artisanal process... but propelled by a keen understanding of the physics of water and movement. Choosing a loaf EPS (expanded polystyrene) combined with stratification epoxy is no coincidence - it's the technological foundation that brings these avant-garde shapes to life, while guaranteeing durability, responsiveness and total design freedom.

Why EPS/Epoxy?

  • Extreme lightness = better rowing, faster take-off, easier aerial manoeuvres.
  • Optimized buoyancy = glides higher on the water, so less drag, more speed.
  • Superior mechanical strength = an impact-resistant board that doesn't saturate with water.
  • Controlled flexibility = natural energy return with each press of the rear foot.

Hot-wire cutting & manual 100% shaping :
Unlike most boards produced on CNC machines, Ellis starts from EPS raw foam blocks which he cuts with hot wire, then sculpts by hand. This method completely frees us from industrial constraints. It makes it possible to create complex rockersand customized rail/concave/vee transitionsand give each board its own unique personality.
